Notion Pricing in 2026

Plans, AI Add-On Costs, and the Limits Nobody Mentions

Free gets you 10 guest collaborators and 5 MB uploads. Plus costs $10/mo. But the real question is whether Notion AI at $10/member extra is worth paying for when standalone AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude exist.

Notion AI Pricing Explained

Notion AI costs $10 per member per month on top of your plan. It is not a workspace-level flat fee. Every member who needs AI access adds $10/month to your bill, regardless of whether they are on the Free, Plus, Business, or Enterprise plan.

The AI add-on includes writing assistance (drafts, summaries, translations), Q&A across your entire workspace (ask a question and Notion searches all your pages for the answer), autofill for database properties, and AI-powered templates. It runs on large language models and processes content within your Notion workspace.

Here is the math that most pricing pages skip. Consider a 10-person team on the Plus plan billed annually:

With AI for all 10 members

Plus plan: $8 x 10 = $80/mo

AI add-on: $10 x 10 = $100/mo

$180/mo ($2,160/year)

AI is 56% of total spend

With AI for 2 power users only

Plus plan: $8 x 10 = $80/mo

AI add-on: $10 x 2 = $20/mo

$100/mo ($1,200/year)

Save $960/year vs full team AI

Alternative: Skip Notion AI entirely

A ChatGPT Team subscription costs $25/user/month and works across all apps, not just Notion. A Claude Team subscription costs $30/user/month. If only 2 or 3 people on your team need AI assistance, standalone subscriptions give them more capable AI for general tasks while costing less than adding Notion AI to every seat.

The advantage of Notion AI is workspace integration: it can search all your pages, summarize meeting notes in context, and autofill database fields. Standalone tools cannot do this. If your team relies heavily on Notion as a knowledge base, the workspace-aware AI is worth the premium for at least your key users.

Hidden Cost: Guests vs Members

Members

  • $Count toward your per-seat billing
  • $Full access to all shared teamspaces
  • $Can create pages and databases anywhere
  • $Access all features included in your plan
  • $Can be assigned to groups and permissions
  • $Show up in workspace analytics

Guests

  • Free on paid plans (up to 10 on Free plan)
  • Can only access pages you explicitly share
  • Cannot browse or search the full workspace
  • Cannot create pages outside their shared area
  • Limited to view or edit on specific pages
  • No access to teamspace settings or admin tools

The cost trap: Guests who need to edit multiple pages, access different teamspaces, or use Notion regularly often end up being converted to members because the guest limitations become too restrictive. A company that starts with 10 members and 15 guests may find that 8 of those guests need member access within a few months, pushing the bill from $100/month to $180/month on the Plus plan. Factor in this likely conversion when budgeting.

Annual vs Monthly Billing

PlanMonthly billingAnnual billingSavings per seat/year
Plus$10/member/mo$8/member/mo$24/seat/year (20%)
Business$18/member/mo$15/member/mo$36/seat/year (17%)
AI add-on$10/member/mo$10/member/mo$0 (no annual discount)

When annual billing makes sense

You have a stable team size, you are committed to Notion for the next 12 months, and you want the 17% to 20% savings. A 20-person team on Plus saves $480/year by paying annually.

When monthly billing makes sense

You are still evaluating Notion, your team size fluctuates (seasonal contractors, freelancers), or you are not sure which tier you need. The 20% premium is worth the flexibility.

Notion Pricing History

2024

AI add-on becomes a permanent paid feature

Notion initially offered limited free AI queries but transitioned to the $10/member/month model. The free trial period ended, making AI a clear upsell on every workspace.

2023

Free plan restrictions tightened

Notion reduced the Free plan guest limit to 10 (previously higher) and enforced the 5 MB upload cap more strictly. The block limit for team workspaces on Free was removed, but guest and file restrictions pushed more teams to Plus.

2023

Notion AI launched as a paid add-on

Initially launched in beta with free usage, then moved to $10/member/month. The add-on brought writing assistance, Q&A, and autofill capabilities to all plan tiers.

2022

Plan renaming: Personal Pro became Plus

Notion simplified its plan names from Personal/Personal Pro/Team/Enterprise to Free/Plus/Business/Enterprise. Prices remained largely the same, but the Business tier added SAML SSO which was previously Enterprise-only.

2020

Free plan made genuinely free for individuals

Notion removed the block limit on the free Personal plan, making it one of the most generous free tiers in productivity software. This move significantly boosted user acquisition and established Notion as a viable Evernote and Google Docs alternative.

A 10-person team on the Plus plan (billed annually) pays $130/month with AI for 5 members.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Notion offer an education discount?
Yes. Notion provides the Plus plan completely free for students and educators who sign up with a .edu email address. This includes unlimited blocks, unlimited file uploads, 30-day page history, and unlimited guest collaborators. There is no time limit on the education plan, so students can use it throughout their entire academic career. The AI add-on is also available at a discounted rate for education accounts.
What is the Notion for Startups program?
Notion for Startups gives eligible early-stage companies up to $1,000 in Notion credits. To qualify, your startup must have fewer than 50 employees, less than $10 million in funding, and be backed by an approved venture capital partner. The credits can be applied to any paid plan including the AI add-on. Apply through Notion's website or through your VC's partnership portal.
Can I export my data if I leave Notion?
Yes. Notion allows you to export your entire workspace in Markdown, CSV, or HTML format. Go to Settings, then Workspace, and select Export All Workspace Content. The export includes all pages, databases, and files. However, the formatting will not be perfectly preserved in all cases, especially for complex database views, linked databases, and embedded content. Plan for some cleanup work after exporting.
Is Notion AI worth the extra $10 per member per month?
It depends on how many team members actively use AI features. Notion AI is useful for summarizing meeting notes, generating content drafts, autofilling database properties, and asking questions across your workspace. However, at $10/member/month, a 20-person team pays $200/month for AI. If only 5 people actively use AI, it may be cheaper to give those 5 people a separate ChatGPT or Claude subscription at $20 to $30/user/month and skip Notion AI entirely.
What is the difference between guests and members in Notion?
Members are full workspace participants who count toward your per-seat billing. They can access all shared pages, create content anywhere, and use all features included in your plan. Guests have limited access: they can only view and edit specific pages you invite them to. On the Free plan, you are limited to 10 guest collaborators. On Plus and above, guests are unlimited. The catch is that guests who need broader workspace access often end up being converted to paid members.
Does Notion offer monthly billing or is it annual only?
Notion offers both monthly and annual billing. Monthly billing is available on Plus ($10/member/month) and Business ($18/member/month). Annual billing reduces the price by 20%, bringing Plus to $8/member/month and Business to $15/member/month. Enterprise requires annual billing and custom pricing. The AI add-on is always $10/member/month regardless of billing period.
How does Notion pricing compare to Confluence?
Confluence Standard costs $6.05/user/month (for up to 35,000 users) while Notion Plus costs $10/member/month. For a 50-person team, Confluence runs $302.50/month versus Notion Plus at $500/month. Confluence is cheaper per seat but has a steeper learning curve and less flexibility. Notion is better for teams that want a combined wiki, project tracker, and document editor in one tool. Confluence is better for large enterprises already using Jira and other Atlassian products.
What happens to my data if I downgrade from Plus to Free?
Your content is preserved, but some features become restricted. You lose page history beyond 7 days, file uploads are capped at 5MB each, and guest collaborators beyond 10 are locked out (they can no longer access shared pages until you reduce guest count). No data is deleted, but you may lose access to certain features like bulk export and API integrations that require a paid plan.
