What Changed in 2025

Since May 2025, Notion AI is bundled into Business and Enterprise only. Free and Plus users get just 20 lifetime AI trial responses. The separate $10/user/month add-on has been discontinued. This makes the Plus-to-Business upgrade the biggest pricing decision for teams.

Which Plan Do You Need?

Three questions. One recommendation.

Are you a solo user?

If you work alone with fewer than 10 collaborators and do not need files over 5 MB, the Free plan is genuinely enough. Students get free Plus with a .edu email.

Do you need AI features inside Notion?

If yes, you need Business at $20/user/mo (annual). There is no way to buy AI separately. If your team can use external AI tools (ChatGPT, Claude), Plus at $10/user/mo saves you 50%. See our Plus vs Business comparison.

Do you need SSO, compliance, or audit logs?

Is the Notion Free plan really free?
Yes. Notion Free includes unlimited pages and blocks for individual use, API access, and all templates. The limitations are: 5 MB per file upload, 10 guest collaborators, 7-day page history, and only 20 lifetime AI trial responses. For solo users who do not need large file uploads or extensive collaboration, the Free plan is genuinely sufficient.
Should I choose Notion Plus or Business?
Choose Plus ($10/user/mo annual) if your team does not need AI features, SAML SSO, or private teamspaces. Choose Business ($20/user/mo annual) if you need full AI access, SAML SSO, 90-day page history, private teamspaces, or advanced permissions. The biggest factor in 2026 is AI: Business is the only paid tier with full AI included.
Does Notion offer a student discount?
Yes. Students and educators with a .edu email address get the Plus plan completely free. This includes unlimited blocks, unlimited file uploads, 30-day page history, and up to 100 guest collaborators. There is no time limit. Nonprofits also get 50% off through TechSoup.
How does Notion pricing compare to Confluence?
Confluence Standard costs $6.05/user/month and includes AI (Rovo) at no extra charge. Notion Business costs $20/user/month with AI included. For a 50-person team, Confluence is $302.50/month vs Notion Business at $1,000/month. Confluence is cheaper per seat, but Notion replaces more tools (wiki + project tracker + database) while Confluence typically requires Jira alongside it.
Can I get Notion AI without upgrading to Business?
Not as a standalone purchase. Since May 2025, the only way to get full Notion AI access is on Business or Enterprise plans. The workaround: stay on Plus and give power users a separate AI tool like ChatGPT Team ($25/user/mo) or Claude Team ($30/user/mo). This can be cheaper than upgrading the entire team to Business if only a few people need AI daily.
